Storm Season Electrical Safety: A Sydney Homeowner's Checklist

Sydney's southerly busters and east-coast lows do more damage to home electrical systems than most homeowners realise. Most of it is preventable.

Every storm season from November through to April, our after-hours line lights up across Sydney. Trees come down on overhead service lines. Lightning strikes overload surge protectors. Water finds its way into roof-space wiring, alfresco powerpoints, pool circuits, and any outdoor cable that was not properly weatherproofed.

By the time the front passes, hundreds of Sydney homes have something electrical that needs urgent attention. The lucky ones lose a single appliance. The unlucky ones lose a switchboard.

Pre-Storm Checks Every Homeowner Should Do

Most storm damage is preventable with about fifteen minutes of effort before the season starts. The list is short, the work is cheap, and the payoff is significant.

Test your safety switches

Press the test button on every RCD in your switchboard. If it trips instantly, the switch is doing its job. If it hesitates or sticks, book a replacement before the wet weather hits. Safety switches are your first line of defence in a flooded circuit.

Check surge protection at the switchboard

A whole-of-house surge protector at the switchboard absorbs voltage spikes before they reach your appliances. Many older Sydney homes do not have one fitted. The unit costs less than a single replacement TV, and it pays for itself the first time a lightning strike comes through the grid.

Walk the outside of the house

Check every outdoor powerpoint for cracked covers or signs of water ingress. Look for exposed cable in garden beds, around pool equipment, or near air-con condensers. Anything that does not look fully sealed is a candidate for moisture damage during the storm. We can fit weatherproof IP-rated outlets and seal damaged cable on a short visit.

What To Do If You Lose Power During a Storm

The first thing to check is whether your neighbours have power. If the whole street is out, it is a network outage. Sit tight, keep the fridge closed, and wait for Ausgrid to restore supply. There is nothing you or an electrician can do to speed that up.

If only your house is out, the fault is inside your boundary. That is when you call us. Do not keep resetting a tripped main repeatedly. Each reset attempt against a wet fault adds shock and fire risk. Isolate the main, leave the rest, and let an electrician trace the cause.

If you smell burning, see smoke, or hear arcing from the switchboard, evacuate and call 000 first. Then call us once the fire service has made the site safe.

How Surge Protection Actually Works

A surge protective device sits at the switchboard. When a voltage spike comes down the supply, whether from a lightning strike, network switching, or a transformer fault, the protector shunts that excess energy to earth before it reaches your circuits.

Modern surge protectors are three-stage devices. The first stage handles the big strikes. The second handles moderate spikes. The third smooths out the smaller noise that wears appliances down over time. Once fitted, they need almost no maintenance. We check the indicator window on each annual visit and replace the unit only when it has absorbed a major strike.

The Fifteen-Minute Pre-Season Check

Before storm season starts properly, set aside fifteen minutes. Test your safety switches. Confirm your switchboard has surge protection and the indicator is green. Walk the outside of the house and photograph any damaged outdoor outlet covers. Make sure you know where the main switch is and that everyone in the house can find it in the dark.

Save our twenty-four hour line in your phone. Then forget about it until you need it. That is the goal, and a well-prepared home rarely needs the call.
